Hashgachah

Opis

HashgachahOpis:London-based composer, vocalist and pianist, Jarmila Xymena Gorna was born in Poland and came to live in London in 1990. Here she found "her own voice", liberating it from the tyranny of words and the habits of phrasing and timbre conditioned by her previous musical influences. A platform for this period of experimentation was provided by appearances at the East London venue, the Trolley Stop, where Jarmila performed regularly over a two-year period. This was followed by appearances at the Jazz Cafe, the Vortex, the ICA, the Union Chapel and Cargo. On 'Hashgachah' Jarmilia's wordless choral and improvised singing is beyond classification. The music is charged with intense emotion and the listener is continuously challenged by her unconventional, idiosyncratic approach as she takes full advantage of her four-octave range. Her piano playing is fluid and passionate. These are the core elements around which she builds subtle arrangements for double bass, percussion, brass, Arabian oud and violin, thereby creating an instantly recognizable style of her own.
