Propaganda

Opis

PropagandaOpis:Written for theatre in 1987 using a host of avian and mammalian voices, snippets of unidentified musical material and electroacoustic noise-sculpting - as well as invented and real instruments, all played by Fred. This was a hard time and the mood is intense, lean and not cheerful, though there are some gruesomely cheery inserts. No fat but a lot of meat. Propaganda is the "missing" fourth side of the original double LP Technology of Tears, released in 1986. It was composed for a theatre production, created and directed by Matthew Maguire and Creation Company, which premiered at La Mama Experimental Theatre in New York. The play was described as "political satire filtered through science fiction and John Webster's Jacobean revenge tragedy The Duchess of Malfi, and coincided with the US interventions in Nicaragua and El Salvador. The music was largely constructed from fragments of multi-track recordings mixed to stereo and then assembled and re-assembled while the play was in rehearsal. Both the multi-tracks and the master mix disappeared after Fred left New York in the early 90s. The original LP version was edited to fit on one side of an LP but this version has been carefully reconstructed from the original source material, using the LP as a reference and adding back the parts that weren't originally included. As was typical of his low budget work of that time, all the instruments and voices were performed by Fred, and additional material was taken from whatever else he happened to be working on at the time, including archive field recordings from his friend DJ Perry, film location sound from film director Peter Mettler, and recordings licensed from the MUZAK corporation, thanks to the intrepid mediating of Amy Denio.
