Opis

ZoomingOpis:Wolfgang Haffner has worked his way continuously upwards into the vanguard of top drummers. The only jazz superstar in Germany with a claim to pop appeal as well, trumpet player Till Brönner places just as much stock in Haffners presence as trombonist Nils Landgren when he prescribes a solid dose of funk for Abba tunes. Rebekka Bakken, currently Norway's most exciting voice in jazz, puts Haffner in the line-up for her band time and again. Besides his virtuosity as an instrumentalist, the case is also well taken that Haffner is an excellent songwriter, arranger and producer. Though ample evidence of his capabilities has already been delivered on previous albums of his, his current release literally "takes the cake". Paying due respect to those of his heroes such as Pat Metheny, Esbjörn Svensson or Dhafer Youssef, he successfully manages to create a convincing blend of innovative sounds, catchy melodies and brilliant group tightness that, for the first time, bears purely European traits. Much like the proverbial chef de cuisine, he has taken the crème de la crème of European jazz musicians and formed a dish that has all the makings of a classic recipe: shimmering guitar riffs from Martin Koller (Rebekka Bakken Band), electronic effects reminiscent of the best of up-to-date Scandinavian productions, a taste of uncompromising rock here and there ('Corazon'), and naturally well-laced with jazz solos at their finest. Till Brönner departs from the trumpet to make a solo contribution on flügelhorn that finesses 'Shape Of Peace' into a dazzling atmospheric highlight. In contrast, the magical singsong chants of Rebekka Bakken on 'Somewhere Else' give the album its most reflective moment. On 'Momos Dance', Nils Landgren grabs the opportunity to dance playfully on trombone around meticulous bass lines by Tim Lefebvre. 'Seventy Five' shines with remembrances of themes from crime series back in the '70s. All fine and dandy, but there are also the electronically ultra-manipulated sounds, for example from saxophonist / bass clarinetist Johannes Enders, that allow 'Zooming' to appear so timeless and yet contemporary, too.
