Lift Every VoiceOpis:Product DescriptionCharles Lloyd's first double-album for ECM offers a wide-roving repertoire of spirituals, folk songs, hymns, standards, love songs, protest songs and original material (including an epic recasting of old favourite "Hymn To The Mother", which opens the set). 'Lift Every Voice' is a veritable cornucopia for radio programmers and jazz DJs, as the veteran tenor saxophonist and his gifted associates (including Geri Allen making her impressive ECM debut) put their personal stamp on songs familiar to millions. Among the double album's popular songs are, from the worlds of pop and soul, Marvin Gaye's timeless "What's Going On" and Billy Preston's tender "You Are So Beautiful". There are jazz standards, Ellington's "I'm Afraid" and Billy Strayhorn's "Bloodcount"; spirituals and hymns, "Amazing Grace", "Go Down Moses", "Lift Every Voice And Sing"; tunes by Cuban singer/songwriter Silvio Rodriguez, several of Lloyd's own pieces including "Angel Oak" and "Prayer, The Crossing" and an inspired transformation of the folk song "Wayfaring Stranger". The choices all have a programmatic point to make. Sometimes celebrating the resilience of the human spirit in dark times, sometimes prayerful, lamenting, questioning, the album is Lloyd's musical response to the tragic happenings in New York on September 11th last year. On that very day, Lloyd and his musicians were to have opened a week-long residency at the Blue Note club in NYC. Instead they witnessed the chaos and devastation at first hand... Co-producer (& Lloyd's wife) Dorothy Darr says: "Lift Every Voice speaks eloquently to the sorrow and despair we all felt as witness to the events of 9/11." Charles Lloyd's classic 'Forest Flower' was one of the first jazz albums to sell more than a million copies. 'Lift Every Voice', with its mixture of easily approachable material and strong jazz soloing can be the recording to introduce him to a new broad-based audience and reconnect him with his original following. Recorded 2002 Personnel: Charles Lloyd - (tenor saxophone, flute, taragato), Geri Allen - (piano), John Abercrombie - (guitar), Marc Johnson - (double-bass), Larry Grenadier - (double-bass), Billy Hart - (drums) Tenor saxophonist and flutist Charles Lloyd's music has been a healing force in jazz and Lift Every Voice is no exception. As fate would have it, he was booked at New York's Blue Note club on September 11, 2001. Lloyd, for those who were lucky enough to see him that week, literally bathed the audience with his Coltranean sounds of love. This double-CD, with pianist Geri Allen, bassists Larry Grenadier and Marc Johnson, guitarist John Abercrombie, and drummer Billy Hart, beautifully captures the serene vibe of the Blue Note engagement. Lloyd's ethereal sax tones sing sweetly over a number of spirituals, such as "Amazing Grace", "Go Down Moses", and the title track, which was written by James Weldon Johnson and was known as "The Negro National Anthem". There's also a mournful rendition of Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count" and a rejuvenating take on Marvin Gaye's soulful "What's Going On". On all of the selections Lloyd shows that jazz soothes, as well as grooves. --Eugene Holley Jr, ReviewIt wasn't until 1990 that Charles LLoyd started recording for ECM; coaxed out of retirement by pianist Michel Petrucciani, it seemed fitting that the tenor player should eventually sign for Manfred Eicher's label. After all, Lloyd's mix of John Coltrane derived modal jazz mixed with influences from Indian musics which gave him such popularity in the late 60s (and attracted a fair share of bile from an elitist jazz press) probably proved an inspiration to many of those on the label's roster; plus his quartet was also a showcase for the talents of the young Keith Jarrett. This is Lloyd's 9th album for the label, and reunites him with drummer Billy Hart as well as bassist Larry Grenadier and guitarist John Abercrombie.
